January 9 – Belonging to Jesus body and soul in life

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

Scripture reading: John 10:22-30

The Biblical truth that believers belong to Christ is one of the greatest privileges and deepest comforts we possess. This life has many joys, but is also accompanied by a variety of sorrows. We speak of a vale of tears with honesty. Believers recognize they cannot travel from this world to the next in their own strength. Christians need to recognize that our eternal security rests with Christ every day. When difficulties come our way, we need to rehearse the words of the hymn writer: “When I fear my faith may fail, Christ will hold me fast; when the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold, through life’s fearful path; for my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.”

Belonging to Christ means that one identifies with and is committed to Jesus Christ, recognizing Him as Lord and Saviour. But it means in the first place that nothing shall separate me from the love of Christ. How precious to know the love of God. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. Belonging means that in faith we may hold to the unshakable reality that no one can snatch us out of the Saviour’s hand. Do you believe this? Oh, you must! To personally know that Jesus as our good Shepherd is bedrock conviction come what may!

“Study to know Jesus more and more, for the more you know Him, the more you will love Him.” – George Whitefield

Suggestions for prayer

Before the throne of grace confess “My soul in silence waits for God, my Saviour He has proved; He only is my rock and tow’r; I never shall be moved. My honour is secure with God, my Saviour He is known; my refuge and my rock of strength are found in God alone” (TPH 62A:1,3).
