“he will separate people one from another” – Matthew 25:32
Scripture reading: Matthew 25:31-46
Have you played a game with a child who seemingly changes the rules so that things are better for them? When this happens you may see what the rule book says, but who is going to make sure that you follow the rules that come with the game?
This is like the world God created. As the Maker, He owns His creation. Therefore, He has the right to make the rules for people to follow. He is the lawgiver. Maybe you remember the story of God giving His laws to Moses. You might have some laws memorized or know where to find them recorded in the Bible.
God also has the authority to reward people for keeping or disobeying His laws. God has the power to create the world out of nothing, to command when it rains, and to direct our government’s decisions. God has the power to execute His rewards and punishments. Therefore, God legislates, sentences and punishes.
We can rejoice that God has this authority for many reasons. God knows all things. He will never over punish or under punish. God knows truth from lies. He won’t make a mistake. But he is not distant and cold like the judges in shows. God loves justice and fair play and hates ill treatment. He will make sure each person gets what they deserve and that all wrong will be righted. God appointed Jesus to be judge; rejoice, believer, that your Saviour is your Judge.
Suggestions for prayer
Thank God for being just. Pray for good works to overflow out of your heart that loves God. Pray for trust that Jesus will right all wrongs and will reward your good works.
