“Lie down until morning” – Ruth 3:13b

Scripture reading: Ruth 3:1-18

Given her character Ruth could have had the pick of the men of Bethlehem. Boaz hinted at that in verse 10 when he said, “You have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich.” But she is a worthy woman who desires marriage to a worthy man. Which makes it all the more beautiful is that there is a budding romance between Boaz and Ruth. What’s more, being a relative, Boaz is a possible redeemer.

But, there’s a possible hitch. Verse 12 states, “Yet there is a redeemer nearer than I.” Such is Boaz’s worthy character that he will not stand in the way of that redeemer despite his obvious affection for Ruth. Verse 13 states, “ If he will redeem you, good; let him do it.” Boaz’s primary concern is Ruth’s well-being.  Which is exactly why he adds, “But if he is not willing to redeem you, then, as the LORD lives, I will redeem you.” One way or the other, Boaz will see to Ruth’s redemption.

And then, those words “Lie down until morning.”  How hard that must have been! But in faith, that is what she does. Before first light she is back home. There she’s told by Naomi in verse 18, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.”

Consider Boaz’s determination to see to Ruth’s redemption. And then consider your Saviour’s determination to see to your redemption and stand in awe of His grace.

Thank the Lord for the gift of the great Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who saw to our redemption.
