“… for you are a redeemer.” – Ruth 3:9b

Scripture reading: Leviticus 25:23-25; 35-38; 47-55

Ruth completes her request for Boaz to cover her with his wings by adding, “for you are a redeemer.”

The covenant LORD provided laws of redemption for his undone people. God cares for His own. He shelters them under His wings. He provides for the sojourner, the fatherless and the widow, too. He provides for all who take refuge in Him.

He is, after all, their Redeemer. In Exodus 6:6, God says to His people who are enslaved in Egypt and in desperate need of redemption, “… and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.” And He did. Why? So that His people would be free to serve Him!

And so, when His people got to the Promised Land, and someone fell into poverty, God provided through the laws of redemption. God always provides for those who shelter under His wings. Now, Ruth is asking Boaz to be her redeemer. She needs someone to provide and care for her. She needs someone to make it possible for her to have covenantal rest so that she’ll be free to serve her God.

See what she is doing? In her undoneness, she is seeking rest by means of the laws of redemption. She is seeking rest, God’s way. Are you? In our undoneness do we first gravitate towards all sorts of human solutions, or is our first impulse to go to our covenant LORD and ask Him to give us rest in His way?

Ask God to help you not to seek out human solutions to your struggles but to always seek His way forward.
