“From whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” – Ephesians 4:16
Scripture reading: Ephesians. 4:7-16
A brick lying in a field is not very effective. It might be considered trash, or at the very least a tripping hazard! But a brick in a house wall? That is a helpful stone!
When it comes to Christian sanctification, we do not grow in Christ by ourselves. Jesus places Christians within a body He calls the church. Within the church, growth takes place as every part (of the body) does its share. The Spirit of God strengthens believers to help others grow in the Lord, and it is as each part does its share that the body grows in love.
We cannot grow in Christ without serving others. Service is not merely a fruit of growth, but a means of growth! We need each other (no one can say to another, “I have no need of you!” 1 Cor. 12:21). Every part of the body has a part to play (even you) to help others grow in the Lord. Sanctification is not merely about understanding certain truths, sanctification requires us to give our time, energy and efforts to help others grow in Christ.
How are you serving? Are you willing to obey the Lord’s call to be a living part of a church that builds itself up in the love of Christ?
Suggestions for Prayer: Ask God to help you encourage others in the things of Christ.
