“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” – John 14:26

Scripture reading: John 14:15-31

Yesterday we talked about the great mystery of the incarnation – Jesus being fully God and fully man. Today we will consider another great mystery – the Trinity. Many people can name the three persons that make up God: 1) God the Father, 2) Jesus, His Son, and 3) the Holy Spirit. These are three distinctly different persons who are always together as one being, God. It is similar to this math problem: 1x1x1=1. Trinitas in Latin (where we get the word Trinity) means three-ness.

The first person mentioned – God the Father – sent Jesus. Jesus obeys God. We are familiar with this relationship as many of us have an earthly father and are taught to do what he says as a child. Yet, the third person – the Holy Spirit – is less familiar to many. He was sent by both the Father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit obeys both.

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his disciples to do three things: 1) to teach all truth, correcting errors in their minds and hearts, 2) to remind them what they’ve already been taught, and 3) to show them more that God wants them to learn. He continues the work that Jesus started. He gently and tenderly shows the Christian the truth from God and shows them how to live in the truth. Imagine, then, how the Holy Spirit might change you.

Suggestions for prayer

Pray for the Holy Spirit to speak truth to the doubts you have about Christianity and increase your faith. Ask Him to give you love for reading the Bible and listening to sermons on Sunday, and to help you obey God’s word. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak truth to those who don’t love God.
