Scripture reading: Romans 5:1-11
The school down the road from us once had a sign out front that said, ”Aim for success, not perfection.” We understand what they mean: no one’s perfect. We know that we won’t be perfect until Christ comes again. But maybe we know that so well that when we hear James say,” Let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing,” we think we shouldn’t take that literally.
But that is God’s goal for us. We think that being saved means I’m going to heaven when I die. This is what He promises us, and this is where He’s leading us, to perfection. This is what Paul says in Ephesians 4:13: “Christ has given His gifts to the church, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and become a perfect man” (NKJV). And in Colossians 1:28: “We proclaim Christ, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present every man perfect in Christ” (NKJV).
God’s purpose in our salvation is to make us perfect and that should be what we want too, that we would become mature adults, full grown in our faith. It’s critical for us to remember God’s purpose and to make it our desire too, that He would use our trials to make us perfect in Christ.
