“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith… – James 1:5-6a
Scripture reading: John 14:1-11
One of the hardest things for us to accept is the sovereignty of God over our lives. We confess it, especially when we talk about how God saves sinners. But when it comes to the way God directs the path of our lives, we’re not always ready to acknowledge and submit ourselves to His freedom to do whatever He pleases, and whatever He decides we need.
But this belongs to the wisdom we need to count it all joy when we meet various trials. He’s God and we’re not. He’s not going to answer all our questions, or justify what He does in our lives. That’s hard for us, but the truth is that we don’t need to know why God is doing this to us and not to someone else. We don’t need to know what God is going to do in the future, or what the future is going to be like in order to be content.
This is because we know God. The Bible is the record that shows us who He is and how He works, and what He’s like. Jesus says, “If you know Me, you know My Father. If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen My Father” (John 14:7,9). It’s clear from God’s Word and in Jesus Christ that He loves us, and He’s committed to our salvation. Focusing on what God has revealed to us in Jesus Christ will give us the wisdom we need to count it all joy when we meet various trials.
Suggestions for prayer
Thank the Lord that you can be sure that you know Him as He is, because He has shown Himself to you in Jesus Christ.
