July 15 - Boaz, a worthy man
“Now Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.” - Ruth 2:1
Scripture reading: Joshua 1:1-9
In the opening verse of the chapter we’re told that Boaz is a “worthy man.” Even though we’ve learned a bit about him already, there’s more in this chapter that confirms it. He greets his workers with, “The LORD be with you” (verse 4). And in asking about Ruth in verse 5, he wants to know who is caring for her. When addressing Ruth, he does so with words of care, “Now, listen, my daughter…” (verse 8), a care further displayed in verse 9. Boaz also has an eye for God’s work in her life, as described in verse 11 and following.
God inserts into Ruth’s story a godly man, a man of the Word, a man of the covenant. A man like Joshua who is guided by God’s law and depends entirely on Him. He puts in place someone to speak into the life of a foreign, fatherless, widow. Someone who is going to show Ruth what her new-found God is like in all His covenant beauty. He’s the God who ties up the frayed ends of your life. He’s the God of redemption and restoration.
Men, what sort of man are you? Are you a truly godly man? Having been redeemed by the Man Jesus Christ, are you godly enough, man enough, to reach out with redemption into the lives of others? Can your family see their Redeemer in you? If you have been blessed with children, can they see the love of Jesus in you?
Suggestions for prayer
If you are a man, pray that God, through His Spirit and Word, would teach you to be more Boaz-like, more Christ-like. If you are not a man, pray that for the men in your life.
