The moon is roughly 400 times closer to us than the Sun, and amazingly also 400 times smaller than the Sun. That makes it possible for the moon to completely block out the Sun during an eclipse while still allowing us to observe and study the Sun’s corona. “It is an amazing ‘coincidence.’ The one place [in the Solar System] that has observers is the one place that has the best eclipses” (5 minutes – read more here).
